Permanent Supportive Housing for a Family

Who Was Homelessness in McMinnville

By Brad Durham

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to McMinnville Action To Create Housing (MATCH), H.O.M.E., and the 30 generous supporters who contributed to help an unhoused mother and her 10-year-old son secure an apartment. A private rental subsidy was established to facilitate their transition into permanent supportive housing.

How It Works – Collaboration

This initiative represents a collaborative effort to provide supportive services and rental assistance. The total yearly rent amounts to $10,800, which breaks down to $900 per month.

Brad Durham and supporters contributed $3,000 to help subsidize the family’s rent, while MATCH has provided $7,800 upfront. The tenant will repay $4,200 to MATCH at a rate of $350 per month, in addition to covering utilities.

The tenant’s share of the rent is set at 30% of her income, which equates to $500. H.O.M.E. has also played a vital role by assisting with part of the security and utility deposits, helping secure furniture, and providing ongoing supportive services.

SIMILAR TO MASTER LEASING

The rental subsidy functions similarly to a master lease program; however, in this case, no one is master-leasing the apartment from a private landlord. The tenant has signed the lease herself, and the rental subsidy facilitates her move from a shelter to permanent supportive housing.

The mother currently works part-time while pursuing full-time employment, and her son is in the fifth grade. They still require some furnishings for their new apartment.
